Project Description

Name/Location:  Great Salt Lake Stork Project

Year: 1986

Work Done: Pioneer Pipeline 12” Replacement.  This project was unique in its nature and in how we got involved. We originally bid on the project, but lost the job to a competitor. The competitor, however, could not figure out how to solve the issue and contacted Enoch Richard for ideas. When Enoch came up with a feasible way to complete the project, the competitor hired us to get the job done.

The project involved pumping water from the Great Salt Lake, which was often overflowing and flooding I-80 and the train tracks, to the west desert. The pumps were driven by natural gas.

Enoch’s plan included the installation of a large lift kit on our equipment which enabled us to dig a trench across the Great Salt Lake then float and sink the pipes into place. Once the pipes were in place, the pumps were activated and the water was diverted to the west desert.

Unique Problem(s)

This project was extremely unique due to the circumstances with the competitor as well as the logistics involved in running pipes beneath the Great Salt Lake. It was also a rush to get the machine out to the job because a storm had come through and sunk the first half of the pipe down into the lake.
