Pipelayers are crucial contributors to our construction projects in Utah. Our pipelayers lay the infrastructure for the natural gas heating lines that have been bringing warmth to families in the Salt Lake Valley for more than four generations.
Whether you are an experienced tradesman or just starting out, a pipelayer job at DSC may be right for you. Here’s what you need to know.
The Job
Pipelayer jobs involve installing underground piping for water, gas, or sewers. Precision is required to avoid leaks or structural failures. At DSC, we specialize in installing shallow (less than five feet deep) utilities to communities in the greater Salt Lake Valley. This includes larger steel lines that run natural gas from its source in Utah to regulator stations and the smaller plastic lines that transport the gas to subdivisions and neighborhoods.
It is important to note the difference between a pipelayer job and that of a pipefitter. Pipelayer jobs involve working outside, providing the underground infrastructure that allows natural gas to flow to different areas, while a pipefitter then installs the indoor pipes that connect to the lines the pipelayer has installed.
Required Skills
At DSC, we hire and support certification for dedicated workers and have experienced pipelayers who provide field training to teach you all the skills you need to be an expert pipelayer. Our pipelayer jobs in Utah are ideal for men or women who have good communication skills to work within a team, are detail-oriented, and have the self-confidence to work independently when needed.
With a pipelayer job at DSC, you will learn job-specific skills such as:
Preparing the Ground for Piping. You’ll learn the ins and outs of operating heavy equipment, like an excavator, to dig trenches and prepare the ground for the piping.
Following Plans and Coordinating with Team Members. Following blueprints and sharing plans, designs, and requirements with construction crews are crucial elements in the pipe-laying process.
Measuring and Installing Piping. Before you install the piping, you’ll need to measure it to make sure it will fit correctly into the pre-dug trench and inspect it for any defects. Cutting or resizing may be necessary.
Finishing the Job. Once the trench is prepared and piping installed, the pipelayer’s job includes refilling the trenches, making sure to use the right materials and the proper sloping/gradients.
